In this week’s NRA Firearm Training Tip we cover the last common malfunction you may encounter while shooting your AR-15, Double Feed (Type 3). This malfunction is caused when two objects, be it an empty casing and live round or two live rounds, try to enter the chamber at the same time.
What causes a double feed?
Why does my rifle double feed?
Why is my ar not feeding next round?
Why is my AR-15 not firing?
Can a gun misfire?
Guns can malfunction in many ways. Often, the malfunction is a simple misfire. The trigger is pulled and nothing happens. Other times, the malfunction could be catastrophic.
Can a double feed fire?
A double feed happens when two rounds try to enter the chamber of a semi-automatic at the same time. Because there is not enough room for both, the gun locks up with the slide partially to the rear. It cannot be fired again until the problem is cleared away.
Why does my AR-15 Jam?
You can misalign the ammunition inside the magazine or, if it’s backed by a strong magazine spring, you could even knock loose a round to try to jump into the chamber prematurely. Either of which will inevitably cause AR-15 jamming.
Why is my AR-15 not cycling?
If there’s too much carbon built up on the internal parts of your AR-15, then it can cause the gun to not cycle properly or not cycle at all. The fix is easy: use a carbon scraper and other gun cleaning tools to remove the excess carbon buildup and get your gun running again.

Can a bullet go off by itself?
For example, if you drop your cartridge near a steel object and it lands at the perfect angle with enough force, the bullet could go off. When there’s enough force, the impact on the primer would mimic the impact of a firing pin after the trigger of a gun is pulled.
Can a Glock fire if dropped?
Glock calls the striker-fired system its “Safe Action” operating system, and there is a lot of truth to that. A Glock can only be fired if the trigger is depressed, meaning accidental falls from holsters and other objects to the ground cannot, for example, cause a hammer to fly forward and impact the primer.
Why do guns jam?
Poor technique, faulty rounds, and mechanical problems lead to a number of reasons as to why the gun got jammed. You can reduce the odds of having your weapon jam by routinely cleaning your firearm.
What is it called when a bullet doesn’t fire?
A dud (also a misfire or failure to fire) occurs when the trigger is pulled but the primer or powder in the cartridge malfunctions, causing the firearm not to discharge. Dud rounds can still be dangerous and should be deactivated and disposed of properly.

Is an AK-47 more powerful than a AR-15?
Even hardcore AR fans will admit that the AK’s 7.62×39 round is more powerful than the AR-15’s 5.56/. 223. No debate here, the bigger round just packs more punch. However, there might be a simple way to compensate for that difference in firepower—by loading your AR with hollow point rounds.

Will an AR-15 fire without a magazine?
Yes, you can fire the rifle without a magazine present in the rifle. Some firearms exist with something called a magazine safety. Magazine safeties will prevent the firearm from firing when the magazine is removed.
How often do you clean AR-15?
A good rule of thumb is to clean your firearm after around 250 rounds, though you’ll want to keep an eye on debris build-up. The more build-up, the more risk of wear and corrosion. If you notice build-up happening, you may want to clean your firearm more frequently.
Should I use gun oil or grease?
‘Oil’, which describes the low viscosity liquid form of lubrication, is more commonly regarded as the best all-around choice for lubricating all types of gun parts in pistols, shotguns and rifles. However, grease is not actually grease, and oil is not actually oil.
